Goori House was established in May 2001 by the directors of Goori Original Ltd to provide a supported residence and intervention program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men experiencing substance misuse (alcohol and illicit drugs) problems. It provides a 7 day a week, 24 hour a day community based service that monitors individual client needs in a physically and emotionally safe environment that is drug-free. Goori House provides a service in the community which allows men a place to go to remove themselves from community and family situations, which are harmful to themselves and others, while they address their substance abuse problems. Goori House is a valuable, culturally appropriate service providing an alternative to, and diversion from, correctional institutions. Goori Original Ltd was incorporated as a public company on the 31st August 2001 in order to administer the recovery house and its programs in a professional and accountable manner, with an emphasis on consultation and the development of policies, programs and practices that will best enhance the clients’ achievement of long-term abstinence, as well as, develop personal and workforce skills and abilities to enhance their day-to-day life. We have watched our people suffer the ill effects of alcohol and drug abuse for a long time. This abuse and dependency has worsened in a progressive manner. It has now extended to our children abusing petrol, glue and solvents and their trading in illicit drugs. The progressive, generational nature of this epidemic has broken down our family structure which our nations were so dependent on for social structure and survival. Goori Original Ltd aims to provide an accessible, high quality service for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and individuals to utilise to address the burden of substance abuse. Our service is vital, providing brief intervention and diversion strategies for those members of the community who have existing alcohol and drug problems and who cannot access mainstream services. Clients are referred to Goori House from detention centres, by family members, Indigenous medical centres, indigenous community organizations, hospitals, detoxification centres, other mainstream rehabilitation centres, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services. Goori House has 10 treatment beds which includes 2 beds for emergencies and/or overnight stays or prior detoxification. Goori House also has Halfway House beds available for clients upon completion of the Goori House programme. In total Goori House currently has an 18 bed capacity with a forward plan to obtain another halfway house, bringing the total bed capacity to 25. We, at Goori Original Ltd, have striven to address the alcohol and drug abuse issues by promoting pride, self-respect, professionalism and a belief in the family structure. At present we are accomplishing the achievement of our goals and objectives in administration, program content, supportive accommodation, diversion and intervention for our clients.
